âIf life is a âdivine comedy,â as many insist it is, who has the last laugh?â
Iâm given the assignment by an angelâI mean that, an angelâone wearing a high-end Armani suit with an Ermenegildo Zegna tie. A loud red one. Why red? To project confidence? Hell, I donât know. Iâm having lunch at Parlamiâs, a mediocre bistro on Melrose where I met my first ex, when in he walks with what looks like a musical instrument caseâFrench horn or tiny tuba, Iâm thinkingâand sits down. We do the usual disbelief dialogue from the movies: He announces heâs an angel. I say, âYouâre kidding.â He says, âNo. Really.â I ask for proof. He says, âLook at my eyes,â and I do. His pupils are missing. âSo?â I say. âThatâs easy with contacts.â So he makes the butter melt on the plate just by looking at it, and I say, âAny demon could do that.â He says, âSure, but letâs cut the bullshit, Anthony. Godâs got something He wants you to do, and if youâll take the job, Heâll forgive everything.â I shrug and tell him, âOkay, okay. I believe. Now what?â Everyone wants to be forgiven, and itâs already sounding like any other contract.
He reaches for the case, opens it right there (no oneâs watchingânot even the two undercover narcsâthe angel makes sure of that) and hands it to me. Itâs got a brand-new crossbow in it. Then he tells me what I need to do to be forgiven.
âGod wants you to kill the oldest vampire.â
âWhy?â I ask and can see him fight to keep those pupilless eyes from rolling. Even angels feel boredom, contempt, things like that, Iâm thinking, and that makes it all that more convincing.
âBecause He canât do it.â
âAnd why is that?â Iâm getting braver. Maybe they do need me. Iâm goodâone of the three best repairmen west of Vegas, just like my sainted dad wasâand maybe guys who say yes to things like this arenât all that common.
âBecause the fellowâthe oldest bloodsuckerâis the son ofâ¦well, you knowâ¦â
âNo, I donât.â
âDoes âThe Prince of Liesâ ring a bell?â
âOh.â Iâm quiet for a second. Then I get it. Itâs like the mob and the police back in my uncleâs day in Jersey. You donât take out the don because then maybe they take out your chief.
I ask him if this is the reasoning.
The contempt drops a notch, but holds. âNo, but close enough.â
âAnd where do I do it?â
âThe Vatican.â
âThe Holy City?â
âYes.â
âBig place, but doesnât have to be tricky.â Iâd killed men with a wide range of applianceâthe angel knew thatâand suddenly this wasnât sounding any trickier. Crossbow. Composite frame, wooden arrowsâdartsâwhatever theyâre called. One to the heart. Iâd seen enough movies and TV.
âWell,â he says, âmaybe. But most of the Jesuits there are vampires too.â
âOh.â
âThatâs the bad news. The good news is theyâre pissed at himâthe oldest vampire, I mean. They think he wants to turn mortal. Heâs taken up with some twenty-eight-year-old bambina who knows almost as many
